DMT, or Dimethyltryptamine, is a powerful psychedelic drug that goes by many names: the Spirit Molecule, Elf Spice, Dimitri, Fantasy, Businessman's Trip, Businessman's Special and 45 Minute Psychosis. It is a crystalline powder derived from plants that grow in Mexico, South America and Asia, which is typically smoked, and induces effects that last from 5 to 45 minutes. But when brewed into a drink such as the South American ayahuasca, the effects can last up to three to four hours.

DMT can induce visual and auditory hallucinations, as well as euphoria, dilated pupils, increased heart rate and blood pressure, dizziness, impaired motor coordination, nausea, anxiety and paranoia.

Some long-term users experience flashbacks months or years after use and may experience episodes of psychosis, which include mood disorders, disorganized thoughts and paranoia.

DMT induces a psychedelic experience upon consumption of a dose of at least 0.2 mg/kg. Its onset is extremely fast when smoked, with effects felt after about 2 minutes following ingestion and completely dissipating after 15 to 20 minutes. Inhaling DMT mixed into the liquids of vape pens is a newer form of administration which is said to be a much easier means of consumption with hallucinations that are as or more intense than when consumed in more traditional ways, depending on the dose.

DMT has been around for hundreds of years, and was popularized in the west during the 1980s and 1990s by Terence McKenna and Rick Strassman, who wrote 'DMT: The Spirit Molecule'.
